The baobab tree (Adansonia digitata) is the most famous son of Africa. At Discovery Garden Pattaya we show 12 baobab trees in our “Baobab Alley”. Baobab trees can be purchased at our outlets in Pattaya and Nong Khai, Thailand.
Above picture shows the first baobab tree I ever saw, which was not in Thailand. Until the first baobab tree arrived in my Pattaya garden, it took a while. The “first encounter” took place in Recife, Brazil.
The second encounter with a baobab tree took place in Fortaleza, equally located in Brazil. This mighty baobab is roughly 500 years old, its diameter is about 10 meters. One single baobab tree can store up to 100000 liters of water and can reach over 1000 years of age. The very oldest on earth is supposed to be 6000 years old.
In Thailand I purchased my first baobab tree at Chatuchak market in Bangkok, but that salesman has discontinued his trade. Later we found a grower of baobab trees somewhere in the Thai provinces. He had grown them from seeds purchased on the internet, but seeds are now difficult to find in Thailand. At Discovery Garden Pattaya we sell baobab trees that are over 2 meters high and three years of age. And we have planted 15 baobab trees in our “Baobab Alley”, in the back part of our Botanical Garden. During the dry season our baobab trees normally shed their leaves and pretend to be dead. But when the rains come back, the baobab leaves sprout again.
We hope to have beautiful baobab flowers soon, like our friend in the Thai North-East who sent us his picture.
And naturally we hope for edible fruits and then baobab seeds in this life, but we might have to wait to next life…But impressive are our baobab trees at Discovery Garden already now. The giants of Africa have made their way to Thailand.
